🃏 Gin Rummy Guide
Overview
Gin Rummy is a classic two-player card game where you draw and discard cards to form melds (sets of 3-4 cards of the same rank, or runs of 3+ consecutive cards in the same suit). The goal is to reduce your "deadwood" — unmelded cards — to 10 or less to knock, or to 0 to go gin.
How to Play
- Each round, draw a card from either the stock pile or the discard pile.
- After drawing, you have 11 cards. Click one card to discard it.
- Form melds: sets of same-rank cards (e.g., three Kings) or runs (e.g., 5-6-7 of hearts).
- When your deadwood totals 10 or less, you can knock (the Knock button appears).
- If your deadwood is 0, you've gone gin — the best possible result!
- Lowest deadwood at the end wins the round.
Rules
- Face cards (J, Q, K) are worth 10 points. Aces are worth 1. Number cards are face value.
- A meld is 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, or 3+ consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Deadwood = total value of cards not in any meld.
- Knock when deadwood ≤ 10. Gin when deadwood = 0.
- If the stock runs out, the round is a draw.
Strategy Tips
- Keep low cards: Low deadwood cards (Aces and 2s) are less costly if unmelded.
- Watch the discard pile: Don't discard cards the AI might need.
- Be flexible: Don't commit to one meld strategy too early — keep cards that could form multiple melds.
- Knock early: Sometimes knocking with 10 deadwood is better than waiting for gin and risking the AI knocking first.
- Track discards: Cards that have been discarded can't complete your opponent's melds.
Difficulty Levels
- Easy: AI makes random discard and pick decisions.
- Medium: AI evaluates deadwood reduction when picking and discarding.
- Hard: AI plays optimally, tracking your likely hands and knocking strategically.
