How to Play Word Guess

Every day at midnight (your local time) a new secret five-letter word goes live - the same word for every player. You have six guesses to find it. Type any five-letter combination and press Enter; you don't need a dictionary word, since any five-letter combo is accepted. After each guess the tiles flip to show how close you are: green means that letter is in the right spot, yellow means it's in the word but in a different spot, and gray means it isn't in the word at all.

Solve the puzzle to extend your daily streak - miss a day or fail a puzzle and the streak resets, and the leaderboard ranks the longest streaks on the site. When you finish, share your emoji grid with one tap. Want more than one word a day? Practice mode serves unlimited random words that never touch your streak.

Strategy Tips

• Open with vowel-heavy, common-consonant words - starters like AROSE, SLATE, or CRANE test five of the most frequent letters at once and usually light up two or three clues immediately.
• Make your second guess a fresh scan, not a solution attempt - if guess one gave you little, play five completely new letters (after SLATE, try POUND) instead of chasing an early green. Information beats luck.
• Move yellows, don't repeat them - a yellow letter is confirmed in the word but banned from that column. Slide it to a new position on every following guess until it turns green.
• Watch for duplicate letters - words like BERRY, SWEET, and DAILY trip up players who assume every letter appears once. If four letters are locked and nothing fits, try doubling one you've already confirmed.
• Think in patterns for the endgame - with _IGHT or SHA_E locked in, list every candidate before guessing (LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, RIGHT...). With two guesses left, a scan word that tests three candidates' distinguishing letters beats guessing them one by one.

Playing Word Guess on PlayVersusAI

One five-letter word per day, six attempts to find it, and the same word for every player in the world. Each guess colours in: green means the letter is correct and in the right place, yellow means the letter is in the word but somewhere else, and grey means it is not in the word at all. A new puzzle arrives at midnight.

The shared daily word is the point. Because everybody faces the same puzzle, your result is directly comparable with everyone else's, and the streak counter rewards turning up rather than grinding. Solve it and your streak grows; miss a day and it resets to zero. Log in if you want that streak to follow you between devices.

There is no difficulty setting — the daily word is the same for everybody, which is what makes comparing results meaningful.

Mistakes That Lose Games

• Opening with a word full of repeated letters. Your first guess should test five different letters, and ideally two or three vowels.
• Ignoring a yellow letter's position. Yellow tells you two things: the letter is in the word, and it is not where you just put it. Placing it in the same spot again wastes a guess.
• Forgetting that letters can repeat. When you are down to the last guess or two, double letters are the most commonly overlooked possibility.
• Guessing a word you already know is wrong. Every attempt should eliminate something. Re-testing known-grey letters throws away information.
